For Tocaor:
“Flamenco guitarist Victor Kolstee’s impressive debut album is divided into two roughly equal parts. The first half is all instrumental and features traditional rhythms played solo by Kolstee, as well as one self-composition, a jaunty rumba entitled “Paseando”, on which he’s joined by local musicians André Thibault on guitar and Pepe Danza on percussion. For the second half he accompanies three separate flamenco cantaors (singers) - Jesús Montoya, Antonio de Jerez, and José Lara…Their singing, and Kolstee’s improvised accompaniment, evokes the raw essence of flamenco - the creative tension between sophistication and savagery, control and abandon, that’s embedded in the traditional culture of Andalucia’s Roma.”
- Tony Montague, “Local Discs”,The Georgia Straight, 1999)
“The music sounds like the hard-earned result of extensive study and dedication to the raw essence of flamenco…Kolstee is a true tocaor - a flamenco player steeped in tradition.”
- Chris Wong, “In Sync”, The Vancouver Courier, 1999
“I can declare that this is an exceptional flamenco disc. Kolstee and the vocalists know their falmenco forms and also how to express themselves spontaneously within those traditional song structures.”
